Will my doctor give me anxiety medicine?
I was wondering if I went to my doctor, would he give me anxiety pills. I have really bad anxiety mostly social anxiety with bad panic attacks. Will he give me anxiety medicine or JUST "refer" me to a psychiatrist? I don’t have insurance so I would already have to pay $200 just to see him, and I wouldn’t have enough to go to a psychiatrist or specialist. So would he give me a prescription. I’m at my wits end with my anxiety im depressed and I cant take anymore. Someone please help with this!
Some GPs will prescribe it and some will not. It is a controlled substance and not everyone is comfortable giving more than a few doses. Perhaps, you could try something like Buspar that would give you better long-term relief. The serotonin-acting drugs, like SSRIs & SNRIs have been shown to be most effective against anxiety. Those are not controlled substances and most doctors will prescribe them.

Had the same issue, I was prescribed meds but only took them for a week, I ended up fighting my anxiety. Just know one thing keep going out a much as you can, walk and go to large places with a lot of people even if you can’t bare it, you just need to know you wont die cause of it.

Counseling is a much better way to go than medications. If you go the route of medication, you will have to take it forever. Benzos only work for a little while, you get more and more tolerance to them. They also cause memory problems, can make you aggressive & cause behavioral disinhibition (so if you are ticked off, you will not be able to control yourself). benzos include ativan, xanax, valium, klonopin. Buspar isn’t so bad, but it doesn’t work for everyone. Antidepressants will end your sex life altogether, so you have to decide if you want that. You also can gain weight on them, and they are very hard to stop taking when you want to. A lot of people say the withdrawal is worse than the original condition they were treating. And for anxiety disorders, the problems will just come right back when you stop the meds.
Get some self-help books at the library. Learn to breathe slowly, with your abdomen, and not up in your chest. Try meditation like progressive muscle relaxation or guided imagery. It reduces stress, & depression. See The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook by Edmund Bourne for examples. Free 15 minute guided imagery download at healthjourneys.com.- Cognitive Behavioral therapy is the most effective kind of counseling. Try free computerized CBT at moodgym.anu.edu.au. Computerized therapy appears to be almost as effective as counseling, research shows. Increase exercise dramatically - it really helps. Take a hot bath every night & read a novel when you are in there. Put on soft music. For social anxiety, the way to fix that is thru exposure - you need to screw up your courage and put yourself out there. Hobby clubs are a good way to start - that way you have something in common to talk about. Think it can’t be done? Read my answers I gave tonight to other social anxiety sufferers. It’s called shyness. Don’t make it into a clinical problem. You can fix it yourself. Courage, and over time it gets easier. Read my other answers.
PS I am not anti medication - I have bipolar disorder and have taken medications for that in the past (just didn’t work is the only reason I don’t still take them). Anxiety disorders are best treated with therapy. Don’t risk your fine body and mind with psychiatric medications if it’s not necessary!
