How can I avoid being sad when I end my novel?
*Sighs.* I am ending my novel in 8 chapters. I have it mapped out. I just know I’ll miss my characters and I hate knowing that I’ll actually have to sleep at night, opposed to always thinking about them before I sleep. I’m not writing a sequel to it because it isn’t needed, but will miss my characters and everything of the like. I’m only a minor so I don’t want to publish it for at least a couple years, so forget sharing it with the world yet. I have 28 pages so far (I have 12 chapters, so yes it’s short but I’ll probably have longer chapters later,) and I have a 21,827 word count o.O. How can I cope? Anyone have any similar experiences? Cried when they ended their novel? How did you feel when writing the words "The End?" Thank you! How can I avoid being sad when I end my novel?
- OCD.
When I finished my novel- I CRIED MY HEART OUT.
It wasn’t exactly when I wrote The End. It was at night, when I sat down and asked myself "What’s Leo going to do next?" (leo’s my fav character) and I realized that he WON’T do anything next. I hate it. I hate it like hell. But, you’ll always be able to read your novel again and again and edit it (that’s a long process, you’ll almost hate your characters when you’re done with that)
I coped with starting another series. Your writing has to have developed. Don’t worry, if you start yourself a new project, you’ll be busy thinking about that one to feel sorry for the one that ended.

Well when you finish your novel just know that you won’t actually be finished. Most likely you’ll go back and get a lot of editing done. So just know that you won’t be leaving it soon at all because you’ll keep working on it. And after that it won’t be over because you’ll get to share it with all of your friends and family. Think of it that way.

No one writes "The End." That’s just a bad way to end a book. Once I ended my book I was sad and missed writing. I started thinking about what would happen next to the characters…
But, hey, you finish one and start another! Doesn’t have to be a sequel, just a different one.
And you shouldn’t be thinking about that since you’re only on page 28.

Why not publish it? You can stay with your characters forever and share them with the world that way! Being a minor is no excuse. I’m fourteen and my book was published when I was twelve. If I can do it so can you. It is a very fun and rewarding experience. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want some advice about getting published. Personal experience.
Just think of all the work you’ve accomplished. And you should always still think about your characters–you created them, they should feel alive to you. You could also start another book and create new characters. I’ve been writing a book for two years and I still think it will be sad when I have to end it but I"ve also been think of new character and story ideas I can bring to life when I do finally have to type "the end."

I, too, attempted on ending my novel. I wasn’t really sad about it but when I read the last two sentences of it, an idea struck me.
I added another sentence and with that sentence, it clearly implied that there would be a possible sequel. The ideas just hit me and soon, I already had a better-looking scenario than the first book. But I haven’t worked on that sequel for months.
If you don’t need a sequel, then just create another book. Or maybe you could write a book with a different character’s perspective. Personally, I cannot stop writing fan fictions, instead of the real scenarios I created. I’m quite attached to it.
So try a different prose, if that helps. Look for a new diversion and you’ll survive. Oh yeah, I didn’t write "The End" on the ending of my novel. I took my friend’s advise and typed "The End of the Beginning" instead.

Now’s a good time to start your coke & heroine habit… Fill the empty void w/ material things, sex, or drugs. They’ll cheer you up for awhile, till it destroys your body & family leaving an empty shell of your former self. ;P Just playing…. Um….start on another book, and develop new characters that you’ll inevitably have the same problem w/. As an artist I’m always happy when I’m done creating something b/c I can move on to the next. The creative process is fun but, you can start something new so it doesn’t have to end, and in ending a book, like a painting or sculpture, or song, you can go back, and re-read it. It’s not forever lost in a hopeless abyss. I don’t write novels but, if you miss the characters you could read your book again & again till you get sick of it & them. I imagine just like in real life when someone leaves you, meeting new ppl always helps. Writing a new novel w/ new characters should help.

Why dont you save yourself the bother by continuing to write it. Your word count is about a quater of what a publisher accepts as the minimum for a novel (80,000 words).

By starting another one.
Um…you’re writing a short story, not a novel. Surely you don’t plan for this to be all you write for years? I finish a story that length every couple of months.
