How should I end my novel?
Okay, so my novel centers around a teenage pregnancy basically. And throughout the novel main characters get raped, die and commit suicide (or at least try to) so it’s a very dramatic novel. It’s also a tear jerker. But anyway, I’m on the second to last chapter and the boyfriend leaves the girl. I was planning in the next chapter to have him come back and explain his reasons for leaving and then end it happily, but I was also thinking of making it all a dream or a psychic vision. So I’m not sure what to do. I don’t really like to give my novels happy endings, and I don’t want it to feel rushed. Maybe he was day dreaming? I think that would be wrong, though. Kind of a cheap way out of a good ending. So how should I end my novel?
- OCD.
Yeah, but it wouldn’t really make sense for his character. He wouldn’t do that, and plus he’s broke so he can’t.
MishMash has a very good answer.
I, too, have written novels that revolve around teenage pregnancy and none of my stories have "happy endings" I, personally, feel that the "happy ending" thing is really cliché, so I never use it.
But that’s just me.
My advice? Write whatever feels right, or whatever seems like it would make the most interesting ending for you, personally.
You’re the writer, and most of the time… the writer knows best. ![]()
Congrats on (almost) finishing your novel.
If you don’t like happy endings, don’t end it happily. Have the boyfriend leave and stay gone. The last chapter can be about the girl figuring out how to come to terms with the situation.

4 novels written so far.
Okay, sorry to say, nobody in the world can help you. It’s your book. You wrote the beginning, middle. Now it’s time for you to write the end. Write multiple endings if you have to, and pick the one you like best and fits the plot and character’s best. Don’t do OOC things just because you want a happy ending though.

DON’T make it all a dream or a vision or something, that totally pisses off readers who have invested a lot of time getting into your story.
And I don’t think a happy ending really has a place in a story like this, it would be way more confusing rather than providing closure.
However, you can have a bitter-sweet ending. Like, when the guy leaves, the girl decides to finally kill herself. Take ALOT of time describing her thoughts and other details as she’s doing this. For example, don’t tell the reader what she plans on doing, but describe what she’s doing step my step.
She slides a coffee table to the middle of the room, ignoring the screeching of the wooden legs scraping against the floor. She wipes tears from her eyes, has flashbacks of more glorious times. She has deep thoughts about what has led her up to this point.
She finds a length of rope in the kitchen, and remembers all the memories she had in that room. She turns on her favorite music as she ties the rope into a tight knot. She gathers the strength to climb atop the coffee table, and tie one end of the rope around the ceiling’s pipes. The table is wobbly already.
She places the cold rope around her neck, and stares straight out the open window. All her life she’d been looking out the window of her mind, simply watching life pass by and taking it for granted. Take a moment to give her final thoughts. Then she kicks the table out from under her.
A few minutes later, the boyfriend walks in. But it’s too late.
Well, hope that helps. Good luck!
