Japanese Social Anxiety Disorder patient being abused
***Transcript is at the end***
A family hired a self-proclaimed “social worker” to take care of a 27 year-old Hikikomori (socially withdrawn) daughter who has retired herself in her parents home for 6 years.
Instead of intervening in her early stage of recluse and taking her for a psychiatrist to screen her for underlying mental diseases such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Depression, PTSD, Schizoid personality disorder, Avoidant personality disorder, Asperger syndrome, Agoraphobia, Autism spectrum disorder or Attention-Deficit-Disorder, they finally decided to take a drastic method: They handed down their responsibility to a sadistic money-greedy phony who asked her parents/sisters to hit their daughter/sister and humiliate a highly probable mentally-ill patient in front of a Japanese national television. (Later a “patient” died in her inpatient facility while being handcuffed and chained. Subsequently she was prosecuted and sentenced for 3 and a half years.)
Sadly this video demonstrates two things. 1) How poor the psychiatric literacy of an?average Japanese is.
2) The anger the family exudes against the poor girl, comes from the shame the girl brought to the family for the last 6 years. Their neighborhood, relatives, friends, coworkers would have talked against their back instead of supporting them; that their parents were spoiling her, etc. The family went thru that shame and now their lashing it out on the poor girl in front of TV to regain face.
Japanese people are highly sensitive on how they appear on other people’s eyes. This is b/c Japanese traditionally adopts scare/prohibitory tactics to teach, i.e. you must not do this b/c people will scold you. In other words they don’t care about what the fundamental problem is, but on how they appear and how to get themselves off the hook from people’s scrutiny. That’s why the Japanese are quick to apologize or smile. The mentality is to give a facade of repentance even if you don’t care, and the trouble will go; they don’t like confrontation. My take is that this attitude comes from the hierarchical system of the medieval times when Samurai (servant) used to pledge allegiance to his feudal lord. What your lord asks is imperative. Unlike Europeans for which God is the absolute moral code, that of the Japanese is other people’s random values. This type of blind allegiance is what the Europeans fought against in the French Revolution. The Japanese never had a civil revolution against the authorities to win civil rights like our European friends. We had it handed down by the Americans after the Pacific War. In fact till the U.S. Navy compelled Japan to open to the west in 1854, Japan was a closed nation (ironically like Hikikomori) for a few centuries. Now the nation only got out of its reclusive life for less than 200 years.
Japan is no advanced country. The country has advanced industry but the people’s mindset is still limited and medieval. They never had a breakthrough revolution on their own. They had it easy. This country only has tamed humanoids with good rote memory and engineering skills. 10% are successful foreign demand firms, the rest are obsolete educators, greedy civil servants/politicians leeching on political interests, and downhill internal demand firms.
This video is the omen of the future of the ever-stagnating Japan.

Don’t Panic - UK Government Censors news story titled “Banks are ‘technically insolvent’”?
******** Update **********
As of Jan 21, 6 am GMT, the link is back and working again. Interesting?
********************************
I guess they are trying desperately to prevent any bank runs, or a general panic.
Note that while David Prosser is normally a financial markets writer, Ben Russell is a general staff writer, and may not have been “thinking clearly” when he wrote this piece. Nevertheless, once published is it right for it to be removed? Or should an amended, less controversial version been published?
I do hope neither of these gentlemen are sacked for this.

British banks are ‘technically insolvent’
By Ben Russell and David Prosser
Saturday, 17 January 2009
Britains biggest banks are “technically insolvent”, Royal Bank of Scotland said yesterday, as the global banking industry was rocked by another day of turmoil, including the announcement of $23bn (£16bn) of new losses from Merrill Lynch and Citigroup, the giant US institutions.
Analysts working for RBS, one of several British banks to have received emergency funding from the UK Government last year, told the City that “the domestic UK banks are technically insolvent on a fully marked-to-market basis”.
The warning does not mean British banks are about to go bust, because the essment is purely theoretical, and RBS said the position was “not unusual at this stage in the economic cycle”.
However, it will add to pressure on the Government to provide more support for the country’s banks. Treasury officials are now set to spend this weekend in talks about a fresh round of measures, which could be unveiled as early as next week, to free up lending to households and major corporations hit by the credit crunch.
The value of Barclays fell by a quarter in stock market trading yesterday, amid a series of wild rumours about its finances, although the bank said it saw no need to comment on the drop. Its board said in a statement last night that it knew “no justification for the fall”.
The statement said next month the bank expected to report that profits before tax for 2008 were “well ahead” of the £5.3 billion forecast by analysts.
City analysts said the bank had been targeted by traders after regulators lifted a ban yesterday on the short selling of financial stocks. Barclays’ share price, along with the value of other British banks, was also hit by dismal news from the international markets, including the announcement on Thursday night that the Irish government was nationalising Allied Irish Banks. In the US, Bank of America announced yesterday that it was taking a $20bn injection of emergency funding from the US government, subsequently revealing that Merrill Lynch, the investment bank it rescued last year, had lost more than £15bn in the final three months of last year.
Citigroup, once the world’s largest bank, announced more than $8bn of losses for the final quarter of last year, and revealed plans to split itself in two.
Treasury officials were still discussing plans to help British banks last night but the proposals are likely to include up to £100bn of new guarantees for the wholesale markets that underpin mortgage and other loans.
Other possible measures being considered include state support to help Britain’s largest companies raise their own funds. Another option is to launch a “bad bank” to remove tainted ets from the banks’ balance sheets, though while this policy is under consideration, it is thought to remain some way off.
Other proposals include ring-fencing the toxic ets within bank balance sheets. Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary, has also talked of easing the terms of the Government’s £37bn bank bailout in order to kickstart lending. Downing Street made it clear yesterday that the Government remained committed to doing “whatever is necessary to help British businesses and families get through this global financial recession”.

Panic And Anxiety Disorders - Treatments For / Mental Health Video Documentary
Panic Disorder - Stories of Hope / Documentary Video; National Institutes of Health; National Institute of Mental Health; Panic Disorder: Stories of Hope
AVA19710VNB1 - 1994; This 19-minute video documentary panic disorder, a serious yet often misunderstood mental illness, is useful for presentations at public and professional seminars and meetings. Introduced by TV personality Willard Scott, who himself has recovered from panic disorder. Producer: National Institutes of Health; Panic Disorder. What is Panic Disorder?; Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder and is characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms that may include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or abdominal distress. Signs & Symptoms: People with panic disorder have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. During a panic attack, most likely your heart will pound and you may feel sweaty, weak, faint, or dizzy. Your hands may tingle or feel numb, and you might feel flushed or chilled. You may have nausea, chest pain or smothering sensations, a sense of unreality, or fear of impending doom or loss of control. More about Signs & Symptoms: Treatment: Effective treatments for panic disorder are available, and research is yielding new, improved therapies that can help most people with panic disorder and other anxiety disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives. Panic Disorder is a serious condition that around one out of every 75 people might experience. It usually appears during the teens or early adulthood, and while the exact causes are unclear, there does seem to be a connection with major life transitions that are potentially stressful: graduating from college, getting married, having a first child, and so on. There is also some evidence for a genetic predisposition; if a family member has suffered from panic disorder, you have an increased risk of suffering from it yourself, especially during a time in your life that is particularly stressful. Please remember that only a licensed therapist can diagnose a panic disorder. There are certain signs you may already be aware of, though. One study found that people sometimes see 10 or more doctors before being properly diagnosed, and that only one out of four people with the disorder receive the treatment they need. That’s why it’s important to know what the symptoms are, and to make sure you get the right help. Many people experience occasional panic attacks, and if you have had one or two such attacks, there probably isn’t any reason to worry. The key symptom of panic disorder is the persistent fear of having future panic attacks. If you suffer from repeated (four or more) panic attacks, and especially if you have had a panic attack and are in continued fear of having another, these are signs that you should consider finding a mental health professional who specializes in panic or anxiety disorders. Body: There may be a genetic predisposition to anxiety disorders; some sufferers report that a family member has or had a panic disorder or some other emotional disorder such as depression. Studies with twins have confirmed the possibility of ‘genetic inheritance’ of the disorder. Panic Disorder could also be due to a biological malfunction, although a specific biological marker has yet to be identified. All ethnic groups are vulnerable to panic disorder. For unknown reasons, women are twice as likely to get the disorder as men. Mind: Stressful life events can trigger panic disorders. One ociation that has been noted is that of a recent loss or separation. Some researchers liken the ‘life stressor’ to a thermostat; that is, when stresses lower your resistance, the underlying physical predisposition kicks in and triggers an attack. Both: Physical and psychological causes of panic disorder work together. Although initially attacks may come out of the blue, eventually the sufferer may actually help bring them on by responding to physical symptoms of an attack. For example, if a person with panic disorder experiences a racing heartbeat caused by drinking coffee, exercising, or taking a certain medication, they might interpret this as a symptom of an attack and , because of their anxiety, actually bring on the attack. On the other hand, coffee, exercise, and certain medications sometimes do, in fact, cause panic attacks. One of the most frustrating things for the panic sufferer is never knowing how to isolate the different triggers of an attack. That’s why the right therapy for panic disorder focuses on all aspects — physical, psychological, and physiological — of the disorder. Creative Commons license: Public Domain
